About
London Young Sinfonia, conducted by Eli Brown, presents a programme of Schubert, Verdi, Schnittke, and Stravinsky.
Schubert looks for inspiration in Mozart's classicism for his Fifth Symphony. Stravinsky refracts Pergolesi and the Italian Baroque through a modernist lens in Pulcinella. Schnittke brings sardonic humour and wit to Bach and Corelli throughout his Suite in the Old Style. In Verdi's case, it wasn't until thirty years after the premiere of La Traviata that the opera was permitted to be staged in a contemporary setting.
We have complex relationships with our histories -- at times reflecting our current condition, at others providing perspective or necessary distance from the present. This concert offers a programme of works from the 19th and 20th centuries that seek inspiration from the past to forge a new path forward.
Programme:
F. Schubert | Symphony no. 5
G. Verdi | La Traviata Preludes to Acts I & III (Philip Keller, Guest Conductor)
A. Schnittke | Suite in the Old Style (orch. Spivakov)
I. Stravinsky | Pulcinella Suite
